In a statement from the White House yesterday, President Obama expressed gratitude and pride for the passage of “an overwhelmingly bipartisan piece of legislation,” The Global Food Security Act of 2016.

The act writes Feed the Future, the U.S. global hunger and food security initiative, into law. Ambassador Susan E. Rice, the President’s National Security Advisor, says this is a historic and important step that “reaffirms the United States’ commitment to ending global hunger, poverty, and child malnutrition.”

Feed the Future was born out of a global focus on boosting economic growth through improvements in agriculture. In the developing world, says Rice, a majority of families rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, and investments in agriculture boost economic growth for the poor more than any other sector.

According to Rice, solving the global hunger challenge is also essential to meeting an entire range of goals that guide international development work.
