The diversity of Michigan’s agricultural produce is second only to California’s in the U.S., making it a great choice for growing food processing opportunities in the state.

Michigan’s also in a prime location, with the number-one border crossing in North America between Detroit and Windsor and more than 50% of both the U.S. and Canadian populations within a 500-mile radius.

But for all its opportunity, certain challenges may present obstacles to growth, among them transportation and power.

The state is working to alleviate difficulties food processors might face in relocating or opening new plants in Michigan. Business and government groups are developing measures to address supply chain gaps, water treatment, and economic incentives for food manufacturing operations.
