As part of its Energy Transition for Green Growth act, France has become the first country in the world to set a timer ticking on plastic cups, plates, and utensils.

Some organizations in Europe already plan to challenge the ban. France says they hope to set an example of eco-consciousness by eliminating products that do not biodegrade, pose hazards for animals, and require millions of barrels of oil each year to produce.

2020 was set as the target date after 2017 was deemed potentially too early for many low-income families who rely on plastic utensils. Under the ban, items made of compostable, biosourced materials will still be allowed in the country.
