Grocery costs on average are down 2% from last year. Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are down 7%, and raw ground beef is down 9%, according to the Associated Press.

Demand has dampened for foods most affected by drought and animal sickness. Instead of maintaining prices and pocketing savings, retailers are racing to rock-bottom prices as a way of winning over customers.

Fast food sales are reporting weaker numbers than expected, and some say it’s a result of meat being cheaper at the supermarket. Counter to the actual figures, shoppers are still reporting a perception that their grocery bills are higher than usual.
