Digital Transformation

Research firm Carbonview released data on grocery stores and technology, indicating that a digital transformation is already well underway and even accelerating amongst grocers. In this case, digital transformation refers to leveraging new digital technologies for business models, processes, and customer services to grow sales, increase productivity, and improve the shopping experience through the addition of new services and streamlined conveniences.

“Grocers believe that in two years the impact of digital marketing in every aspect of business performance will be profound.” The findings indicate that some grocers have already invested in certain technologies, and others still have a technological gap.

For example:

  • 83% of grocers studied have a website
  • 79% use email
  • 74% use social media
  • 62% have a mobile app
  • 76% have a loyalty program, something that has been utilized by some before the digital era
  • 78% offer digital coupons through any number of the following methods: mobile app, print at home, load to card, on the company website, or via text message
  • 68% offer online shopping
  • 74% offer free Wifi in stores
