A citizen’s petition from 3 inulin companies asks that inulin-type fructans be included in the FDA’s definition of dietary fiber.
The May 27 issue of the Federal Register requires fibers added to food products to exhibit one or more physiological health benefits. Submitted on September 12, the petition states a number of physiological health benefits, including improved laxation/bowel function, increased calcium absorption, reduced blood cholesterol levels and attenuated postprandial blood glucose levels.
Inulin is found in chicory root and is already promoted as fiber by several food and beverage companies, including General Mills.
