August Brings Another Small Increase in Food Prices: CPI Report

According to the latest CPI report, the price index for food rose by 0.1% in August — the third consecutive month it’s gone up.

The overall index for food at home didn’t change in August, as most of the individual grocery store food group indexes hardly fluctuated. However, there was one notable index decrease that offset all the other (albeit small) increases. Fresh fruit prices slipped by 1.4%, bringing the fruits and vegetable index down by a total of 0.3% — a welcome change after it increased by 1.9% in July.

Food away from home rose yet again, this time by 0.2%. The continuous slow creep in this particular price index has brought the 12-month-unadjusted change to 2.6%.
