Food at Home Prices Unchanged in June: CPI Report

Food prices saw a small increase (+0.1%) in June according to the recently released CPI report. This comes on the heels of May’s 0.2% increase.

Food at home

The food at home index was unchanged during the month of June after a 0.1% increase in May. Two out of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased. The index for fruits and vegetables saw the largest increase at 0.8%, and the cereals and bakery products index went up 0.1% during the month.

The food at home index has risen 4.7% over the past year. The index that experienced the greatest increase was cereals and bakery products, which rose 8.8% during this time. Conversely, the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index fell 0.2% during the year. The other grocery store food groups experienced increases anywhere from 2.7% (dairy and related products) to 7.6% (nonalcoholic beverages).

Food away from home

The index for food away from home rose 0.4% in June, following a 0.5% increase in May. The index for full service meals rose 0.3% during this time, while the index for limited service meals rose 0.4%. This comes after increases of 0.4% and 0.5% in June, respectively.

The index for food away from home has gone up 7.7% during the past 12 months. The index for full service meals rose 6.2% during this time, and the index for limited service meals went up 7.8%.
