The most recent CPI report showed that food prices rose 0.2% in November. This comes after a 0.3% increase in October.

Food at home

The food at home index rose 0.1% during November, following a 0.3% increase in October. Once again, four out of the six major grocery store food group indexes rose over the month. Cereals and bakery products and nonalcoholic beverages were tied for the largest increase, with both indexes rising 0.5%. 

Price changes for the other major grocery store groups included:

  • Fruits and vegetables: +0.3% (unchanged in October)
  • Dairy and related products: +0.1% (+0.3% in October)
  • Other food at home: -0.1% (+0.3% in October)
  • Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs: -0.2% (+0.7% in October)

The food at home index rose 1.7% during the past 12 months. The index for cereals and bakery products saw the biggest increase at 3.4%. Dairy and related products decreased 1.4% during the year.

Food away from home

The food away from home index rose 0.4% yet again in November, after the same increase in October and September. The index for full-service meals went up 0.5%, and limited service meals increased 0.4%.

The index for food away from home rose 5.3% over the past 12 months. The index for full service meals went up 4.3% and the index for limited service meals increased 6.0% during this time.
