Background

As a leading regional food service distributor with a growing manufacturing operation, Bertram Foods relies on mobile computing to track inventory, execute deliveries, and maintain warehouse efficiency. When aging scanner hardware began causing frequent downtime, Bertram turned to MIDCOM Data Technologies to explore both short term fixes and long term solutions. This resulted in a strategic transformation of Bertram’s device infrastructure reducing downtime, increasing productivity, and securing mobile assets across its operations.

The Challenge

Bertram had roughly 60 Zebra TC26 scanners in use, with about 45 deployed daily across its transportation team. Frequent repairs, much of the time due to cracked screens, meant two to four scanners were out of service each month. This disrupted delivery schedules, as drivers couldn’t be dispatched without functional devices to track outgoing and incoming inventory.

The downtime led to major operational constraints like:

  • Delivery delays and split shifts to rotate devices
  • Insufficient backup devices to maintain daily service levels
  • Incompatibility with updated software and Android versions
  • A lack of asset control and visibility into scanner use

With growth on the horizon and an infrastructure upgrade in progress, Bertram needed more rugged, modern devices and a secure system to track and manage them.

The Solution

MIDCOM worked with Bertram Foods in phases to stabilize operations, modernize hardware, and introduce intelligent asset control.

Phase 1: Device Assessment and Coverage

  • Repair and coverage planning: MIDCOM evaluated the device fleet and enrolled all units in a consistent annual service coverage plan.
  • Fleet expansion: New TC26 scanners were added to support growing demand and ensure redundancy during repair cycles.

Phase 2: Upgrade to Zebra TC78

Bertram was planning system-wide software and ERP upgrades, which required devices that could support newer Android versions and integrate cleanly with application environments. Rather than investing further in the soon-to-be-discontinued TC26 series, MIDCOM recommended Zebra’s TC78 series, offering advanced performance, durability, and long term compatibility.

  • Demo and testing: A demo unit was provided for Bertram’s transportation and IT teams to run comprehensive tests including field use, signal stability, and app integration.
  • Deployment: Following successful tests, the TC78 devices were phased in to replace the legacy hardware.

Phase 3: Intelligent Asset Management

To address concerns about device loss, misuse, and accountability, Bertram implemented Zebra’s Intelligent Cabinet System with Access Management features.

  • Secure access: Scanners now require PIN entry to be removed from storage. Unauthorized removal triggers alerts and prevents further use.
  • Remote monitoring: Bertram’s leadership team can monitor device status and receive alerts from anywhere, adding a critical layer of control and responsiveness.
  • Investment protection: With device costs ranging between $1,200 and $4,000, the ability to prevent loss and theft significantly reduces capital waste.

Implementation Support

MIDCOM Data Technologies provided ongoing support throughout the transition. While Bertram initially estimated a one-month deployment for the new devices and cabinet systems, MIDCOM accurately projected a longer timeline due to backend setup and integration needs. Coordinating with Zebra engineering and technical teams, MIDCOM helped ensure that system rollout stayed on track and minimized disruption.

MIDCOM’s consultative approach went beyond supplying equipment offering direct support, cutting through vendor red tape, and helping the Beltram team get the most from its technology investment.

The Results

  • Reduced downtime: Reliable, durable hardware means fewer repairs and fewer delays in the field.
  • Improved productivity: Drivers now have consistent access to fully operational scanners, streamlining deliveries and inventory capture.
  • Asset security: Devices are secured and traceable, with real-time oversight and lockdown capabilities.
  • Future-ready infrastructure: New devices and systems are compatible with upcoming Android OS versions and integrate seamlessly with Bertram’s application stack.

Next Steps: Warehouse Technology Expansion

Based on the success of the transportation rollout, Bertram has expanded its work with MIDCOM to support warehousing and manufacturing operations. This includes identifying new Zebra hardware suited for warehouse workflows, integrating those devices with existing systems, and extending asset control across departments.

The scalability of MIDCOM’s services and Zebra’s product ecosystem continues to support Bertram’s long term growth and evolving needs.

Conclusion

What began as a request for scanner repairs has grown into a transformative technology partnership. With MIDCOM’s expertise and guidance, Bertram Foods has moved from reactive maintenance to a proactive, strategic approach to mobile device management, boosting efficiency, improving security, and setting the foundation for scalable growth.
