High Oleic Palm Oil Emerges as Superior Alternative to “Hateful Eight” Seed Oils

Colombian-Grown, Arizona-Distributed Seedless Oil Delivers Health and Environmental Benefits

Scottsdale, Ariz. (July 24, 2025) – Del Llano Farms, third generation regenerative farm and leading producer of high-yield, non-GMO hybrid High Oleic palms, shared research that validates High Oleic Palm Fruit Oil (HOPO) as a healthier, sustainable alternative to traditional seed oils. CEO and Co-founder Roberto Herrera, who also serves as President of the Cámara Alto Oleico (High Oleic Chamber), presented these findings at the Technical Roundtable on High Oleic Palm Oil in Cali, Colombia.

At the Roundtable, Herrera presented High Oleic Palm Fruit Oil’s superior nutritional profile with low saturated fats, high monounsaturated fats similar to olive and avocado oils, and only 12% polyunsaturated fats compared to 35% in canola and 60% in soy. Technical studies confirmed its 450°F smoke point makes it ideal for cooking and frying without creating toxic compounds or unpleasant aftertastes.

Medical professionals, labeled seed oils including canola, corn, soy, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, grapeseed, and rice bran, as the “Hateful Eight” due to their high Omega-6 content and potential links to chronic diseases. This growing opposition comes from medical professionals, nutrition researchers, and government health agencies.

“High Oleic Palm Fruit Oil is not just another oil. It is the result of combining technology, sustainability, and nutrition in one product. It is, without doubt, the most complete vegetable oil available today,” said Roberto Herrera Lara, CEO and Co-founder of Del Llano Farms. “We used to say olive oil was good for everything, except heating. HOPO is good for everything, including heating.”

The french fry market represents one subset of the food industry now shifting toward seedless oils. Earlier this year, Del Llano Farms announced a partnership with Frites Street, the chef-trusted frozen fry brand known for its clean-label Belgian-style fries. Under the agreement, Frites Street became the first national fry manufacturer in the U.S. to go 100% Non-Seed Oil, converting their entire food operations to Tropical High Oleic Oil. The Arizona-based company now exclusively uses the seedless oil for the initial preparation of its nationally renowned french fries and sells the oils to its culinary customers for use in commercial kitchens.

“Our decision to transition to Del Llano Farms’ Tropical High Oleic Oil was based on clear performance advantages—it offers clean label ingredients, seedless composition, and is sustainably grown,” said Flip Isard, Founder of Frites Street. “The oil delivers superior frying results, enhanced flavor profiles, and the golden crisp texture our chefs love, all while maintaining our commitment to both health and environmental responsibility.”

Industry research cited during the Technical Roundtable revealed the sustainability benefits of HOPO extend beyond nutrition. It produces up to 10 times more oil per hectare than annual crops like soy or corn, each hectare equals 10,000 square meters of land. HOPO can be harvested year-round, providing steady income for farmers and each palm produces for over 40 years, encouraging soil protection and enrichment.

Grown under RSPO, ISCC, and EUDR certifications, which verify sustainable farming practices and supply chain management for palm oil, HOPO requires 93% less land than other oil crops while ensuring no recent deforestation. Del Llano Farms produces up to 9 tons of oil per hectare—compared to 0.43 for soy and 0.73 for canola—resulting in less land use, more oil production, and lower environmental impact. Arizona-based S&K Oil Sales serves as the exclusive North American distributor.
