Food prices went up 0.2% in the month of June, slightly higher than the 0.1% increase in May. This news comes from the most recent CPI report.  The rise in food prices contrasts with the CPI Index for All Urban Consumers, which went down 0.1% during June.

Food at home

The food at home increased 0.2% during June. Four of the major grocery store food group indexes increased during the month, while the other two indexes decreased. The index for dairy and related products saw the largest increase at +0.6%. The index for fruits and vegetables saw the largest decrease, at -0.5%.

Price changes for the other major grocery store groups included:

  • Other food at home: +0.5% (Unchanged in May)
  • Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs: +0.2% (+0.2% in May)
  • Nonalcoholic beverages: +0.1% (-0.3% in May)
  • Cereals and bakery products: -0.1% (+0.2% in May)

The food at home index rose 1.1% during the past year. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs saw the largest increase at 2.6% during this time. The largest decrease was seen in the index for fruits and vegetables, which went down 0.5%.

Food away from home

The food away from home index saw the same increase as it did in May, which was +0.4%. The index for full service meals went up 0.6%, and the index for limited service meals rose 0.2%.

The index for food away from home went up 4.1% over the past 12 months. The index for full service meals saw a 3.9% increase during this time, and the index for limited service meals saw a 4.3% increase.
