Last week’s Input Cost Index update flagged something new: every cost driver, grain, freight, and factory input costs, moved the same direction at once, the first time that had happened in this index’s history.
This week, boxed beef broke rank. It reversed a five-week slide, rising $3.70/cwt, while ocean freight kept falling for a fourth straight week.
One data point doesn’t make a trend. The index is still deep in High Pressure territory, and the underlying pressure hasn’t gone anywhere. But the alignment we flagged last week already cracked, faster than we expected.
If you’re using last week’s alignment to justify a Q4 procurement or pricing call, wait for confirmation. One week’s move isn’t enough to act on.
