Consumer preferences are evolving rapidly, pressuring food manufacturing leaders to keep up with shifting demands to maintain a competitive edge.
Our first annual Consumer Food Trends Report offers valuable insights into the emerging forces shaping consumer purchasing decisions — from generational differences to sustainability concerns — as well as data-driven strategies to help companies engage with different consumer segments effectively.
Highlights from the report include:
- Ingredient awareness grows: Consumers overall value protein content and natural ingredients, with younger shoppers more likely to prioritize non-GMO and organic certifications. Older generations focus more on nutritional fundamentals like low-sugar and low-sodium content.
- Product discovery requires a multi-channel approach: Three-quarters of Gen Z and 56% of Millennials find out about new products through social media. Meanwhile, traditional advertising remains strong with older groups — 64% of Gen X consumers discover products via TV ads, and 20% of consumers over 60 use print advertisements.
- Sustainability matters: Young consumers actively seek sustainable products, with many willing to pay more for them, while older generations show less interest in learning about company sustainability practices. However, animal welfare is a key issue across all generations.
- Transparency builds trust: Consumers, especially Millennials and high-income groups, expect transparency in ingredients and sourcing. Food safety is also a crucial component of brand trust — 51% of consumers will abandon a brand after a safety incident, underscoring the importance of maintaining high standards.
