After small increases in August and September, food prices were unchanged in October, according to the CPI report released today.

Food at home stays the same

For the second month in a row, the index for food from home remained steady, bring the 12-month total to +0.6%.

Only one of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased in October. The meat, eggs, and poultry index crawled up 0.6%. But meat and poultry didn’t have a lot to do it — the price of eggs increased 6.7%. Meanwhile, the cost of beef went down 0.8%.

The index for cereals and bakery products saw its biggest decline since November 2015: down 0.5%. Dairy and related products and other food from home also saw declines. The indexes for fruits and vegetables and non-alcoholic beverages went unchanged.

Price of eating away from home rises

The price index for food away from home continued its upward trend in October. It rose 0.1%, bringing the unadjusted 12-month increase to 2.3%.
